Switched-On Schoolhouse Placement Test Instructions!

The Switched-On Schoolhouse Placement Test is designed to help you determine where your student places in the Switched-On Schoolhouse curriculum and will be helpful in pinpointing learning gaps.

Following these instructions, you will learn how to do the following:

RUN SOSPLACE.EXE
SET UP TEACHER PASSWORD
ASSIGN QUIZZES
TEST ADDITIONAL STUDENTS (OPTIONAL)
BEGIN STUDENT TESTING
EVALUATE TEST RESULTS
ORDER CURRICULUM
Run SOSPLACE.EXE:
  1. Click on your "Start" button and go to "Programs" and then to "Switched-On Schoolhouse."
  2. Choose "Sosplace."
Set-up Teacher Password:
  1. To set up your password, click on the "Go to Teacher Mode" icon on the opening screen (Student Menu screen) and then click on the "School Setup" button.
  2. In School Setup find the "Teacher Password" box and type in any password. Click DONE at the top left-hand corner of the screen. You should now be on the "Teacher Menu" screen.
Assign Quizzes:
  1. While on the "Teacher Menu" screen, click on the "Placement Test" icon (desk). This will take you to the next screen, "Grading Menu for Placement Test," and on this screen you should see two subjects: Language and Math.
  2. At the bottom you will see a section called "Overview" containing a grid of gold buttons. These buttons indicate the grade levels and are shortcuts to the quizzes (and later will show your student's grades).

  3. To decide which quizzes to assign, note the grade your student is entering this year and then begin the testing two grade levels earlier. (For example if your student is entering the ninth grade, begin the placement test at the seventh grade.)
To start at the appropriate level you must "skip" the levels you do not want.
  4. To skip levels, hold down the shift button on your keyboard and then with your mouse click on the appropriate gold button.

  5. The computer will ask you if you are sure you want to skip this entire unit. Answer "yes."
(Note: Testing covers grades 3-11 in Language Arts and 3-9 in Math. The upper-level courses are specific courses that your student either has or has not taken, i.e. Algebra I, and therefore are not included for placement.)
(Note: Level 01 is a Practice Quiz that you may want your student to take at least once in order to learn the program.)
  6. The next screen that opens will be the Unit Grades Menu showing that all the quizzes in that grade have been SKIPPED. Exit by clicking DONE at the top left-hand corner of your screen. You are now back to the "Grading Menu for Placement Test" screen where you can continue to "skip" levels until you are two below your student's expected grade.

  7. Do this for both Language and Math.
(Note: If you make a mistake, you can reset a unit by holding down the CTRL key and clicking on that grade's gold button.)
  8. When you have finished skipping the necessary grade levels, click DONE then click on "Go to Student Mode." Your student may now take the placement test.
Test Additional Students (OPTIONAL)
You can have more than one student take this placement test. To do so, you need to add extra desk icons.
  1. Click on "Go to Teacher Mode" then click on "Add Student."
  2. Type in the name of your student and click "OK." The screen that opens is called "Student Setup." Here, you will assign the Placement tests to your new student.
  3. Click on the two boxes beside Language Placement and Math Placement under "Subject Assignments." Then click "DONE."

  4. You will be back to the Grading Menu for that student and can pick up the above instructions at #4.
The Placement test for this student will be accessed through the desk icon with his or her name in the Student Menu (opening screen).
Begin Student Testing:
  1. Click on the "Placement Test" desk icon (on the opening screen labeled "Student Menu"). The top of this next screen should say "Schoolwork Menu for Placement Test."
  2. Choose Language Arts or Math by clicking on one of the colored bars at the top (NOT the gold buttons below), and then click on "Start Quiz."
  3. You will answer one problem at a time and your answer will be graded immediately. After each problem, click on the "Next" button to continue to the next problem. After you click on the "Next" button, you can not go back and change any answers.

  4.  You will want to complete each grade level you begin on, even if the material in the current unit is too advanced for your student; your student may have mastered the material in the next unit! We recommend beginning testing two grade levels before your students current grade and completing every test through at least your students current grade level (for example, if your student is in the 5th grade, we recommend beginning testing at the 3rd grade level and continuing through the 5th grade.)

Evaluate Test Results:
You can review your student's work by going back to Teacher Mode to see the scores displayed on the gold buttons in "Overview." You can also click on these buttons to see the individual quiz scores. You can then click on a specific quiz title to see your student's work and (by using the answer key button) see the correct answers.
  1. Objective: A grade-level average of 50% or greater means the student should do well in that grade. For an average of less than 50%, you may want to assess whether to place the student in that grade or the one below it.
  2. Subjective: Compare your student's scores with the content of the corresponding units in the Switched-On Schoolhouse curriculum. The "Scope and Sequence" button located at the bottom of the Teacher Menu opens a text document detailing the curriculum.

  3. The quizzes are comparable to the units in each grade.
Scope and Sequence:
The "Scope and Sequence" button located at the bottom of the Teacher Menu opens a text document detailing the curriculum.

Order Curriculum:
Use the Scope and Sequence document in conjunction with your student's test results to determine which Switched-On Schoolhouse CD-ROMs to order.
