Philosophy:
We are legitimate
in the eyes of the law.
The first schools
established by law were intended to instill biblically-based moral values
and teach the ability to read and count. By the end of the twentieth century
the legal basis for public education no longer included instilling biblically-based
moral values or developing the academic ability of students. However, it
is a long-standing tradition that there is a constitutionally safeguarded
right to guide one’s child both intellectually and religiously.
In a key dictum (Pierce vs. The Sisters) the United States Supreme Court
remarked that the theory of liberty upon which this union was founded clearly
forbade standardization of children through the public schools.
We are legitimate
in an educational context.
Distance education
is among the options available to parents who wish to use an alternative
to the public school system. Distance education can take different forms.
It involves study of lesson materials that are prepared in a sequential
and logical order for study by students under the guidance of a parent
or other qualified adult. This curriculum may be sent to the student by
fax, mail, or computer. Upon the completing the assigned work, it could
be evaluated immediately or returned to the grading service for grading,
comment, correction and subject matter guidance by qualified personnel.
The Distance Education and Training Council, an agency recognized by the
United States Department of Education, reports that since 1890, more than
100 million Americans have studied by distance education, including Franklin
D. Roosevelt, Walter P. Chrysler, Walter Cronkite, Barry Goldwater, Charles
Schulz, and many others. Furthermore, they state that formal studies have
been conducted to measure the effectiveness of the distance education method.
All of the research published since 1920 has indicated that correspondence/distance
study students perform just as well as, and in most cases better than,
their classroom counterparts (see DETC publication, The Effectiveness of
the Home Study Method, 1993). In recent years, electronic technology has
played a significant role in transforming the "traditional" distance education
school into a dynamic, interactive distance learning method using toll-free
telephone lines, as well as a diverse array of home microcomputers, video
devices, CD-ROMs, interactive devices and other modern technological innovations.
Although distance education is not a new phenomenon, the educational possibilities
created by the Internet and World Wide Web have moved it into the mainstream.
Distance education can also be a valuable resource to parents, particularly
homeschoolers, who would like to increase the educational opportunities
for their children.
We do Distance
Education.
Family Christian
Academy is a provider of educational materials and grading/support services
for those who have chosen a distance education alternative. In recent years,
development of electronic technology has played a significant role in transforming
the “traditional paper-based” distance education program
into a dynamic, interactive learning context that relies on telephone lines,
computers, video devices, CD-ROMs, interactive devices and other modern
technological innovations.
We do Distance
Education from a Christian worldview.
Family Christian
Academy is a distance learning service as well as a full time and umbrella
school. Family Christian Academy is a provider of print and electronically
based materials that are supportive of a Christian worldview. Our program
was developed and operates within the biblical teaching that the responsibility
for a child’s education comes directly from God to the parents
and that this responsibility cannot be given to any institution beyond
the home. Therefore, Family Christian Academy is a supplementary agency,
intending to support, but not replace, the home or parental authority (Deuteronomy
6). As an educational service organization, Family Christian Academy is
committed to providing materials and service suitable for the Christian
ministry of education.
We provide
materials suitable for Christian ministry of education.
Such materials
will teach the basic belief that we live in a created universe where all
truth emanates from God. Thus, the materials are intended to support instruction
that establishes Christian truth as a guide for life. (Nehemiah 9:6)
They will teach
that knowledge is both discovered and revealed. Thus the Bible will be
presented as the inspired, inerrant Word of God and only Authority for
faith and practice. (2 Timothy 3:16)
They will teach
that mankind is specially created in God’s image and that man’s
“sub-creative” imagination and powers are inherent
from that creation.
They will teach
the reality of evil, and the fallen or sinful nature of man. They will
teach personal salvation through belief in Christ.
They will be
designed to help in the preparation of the students who wish to acquire
and maintain strong and academic standards through a mastery of the skills
of communication and other academic disciplines so that the student will
be prepared to acquire further knowledge.
